Newsletter February 2006

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2006
Since my last Newsletter back in October which was very positive about the season we have just had, 2005 has turned into an Annus Horribilis. Beryl White died at the age of 79. Beryl had been the club’s secretary, treasurer and scorer for over 50 years. She was a fixture at the club and will be difficult to replace. She was loyal, trustworthy and passionate about Church Fenton and particularly the cricket club. She was delighted at the success of the club in the last 2 years. Every club should have a Beryl. I’m pleased we were able to celebrate her 50 years with the club at various events throughout 2004 culminating in the gala dinner. At our 2005 annual dinner/ presentation night just a week before she passed away, she was made clubman of the year. At the moment she’s probably in some smoking den on high telling the Lord he’s not doing things properly. She will be much missed.
Sadly, John Lofthouse also passed away on boxing day. He was well known in the area having lived and worked here all his life as well as playing both cricket and football to a very good standard. Lofty started his cricket playing for the juniors at Church Fenton some 25 to 30 years ago. He went on to play for Castleford and then Poole before returning to play for Fenton for the last few years. In the 2004 season, in which the club played some of its best ever cricket, John won the bowling averages. Our thoughts are with Sarah, his mother and father – Kath and John, his children, family and friends. He also will be much missed both on the sports field and for his friendly banter.
In view of the above, I won’t spend too much time on other matters. Suffice to say, I hope we continue to play the good cricket of the last few years. We will continue to spend time and effort improving the ground, pavilion and coaching the juniors – the future of the club and, in line with many clubs, we will be putting together a development plan to ensure the future stability of the club. I hope you are are able to join us at the club over the season and also, possibly, come to some of the club’s functions, one or two of which are mentioned below.
We held a junior presentation night recently. A huge thank you to John Blain of Yorkshire and Scotland for handing out Chuch Fenton Cricket Club caps to our juniors. A good evening was had by all.
E-MAIL
This is the the first newsletter which is going out via e-mail. It would be much more convenient if we could start sending newsletters and other bits of information about the Cricket Club electronically to as many friends of the club as possible. If you would like to join our mailing list, or know of anybody else who would, please reply by e-mail to mailto:mark.moorhouse@pumphill.co.uk

The club has entered the national village cup competition. Our first match is away against Folkton & Flixton (near Scarborough) on Sunday May 7th. Support welcome. Make a day of it.
Chris could do with some help at the ground. While there will probably be a couple of pre-season working parties, if you’ve got some spare time give him a ring. I’m sure he’ll find something for you to do.
SPONSORS
I’m afraid it’s that time of the year again in which we are looking for people to either sponsor a cricket ball or a board. Thanks again to all those who have supported us over the years, some for as long as I can remember and I hope you will all continue to support us If you are a new, potential sponsor and would like more details, please ring Mark Moorhouse 0113 281 3541 (or e-mail to the address given earlier). While there is more to it, basically, cricket ball sponsorhip is £20 and board sponsorship is £60 plus the cost of the board in the first year only. Thank you again for supporting the club.
