NEWSLETTER October 2005
What a summer we’ve had. England have won the Ashes, Yorkshire have been promoted back up to Division One of the County Championship and, in the big one, Church Fenton have ended the season as runners-up (again), this time to Spofforth. While disappointing, this is in fact a wonderful achievement with so many young players in the team. Congratulations to the Captain and Players. Also, well done to the 2nd team who, once again, held their own in Division 3 against, mostly, other club’s first teams.
Thank you to all our Ball and Board Sponsors. They provide very necessary finances to enable the club to continue to function. Thank you to everybody who have been part of the club this year, not just the officials and players and all those who have helped with the fund-raising activities but also all those who have supported the club in any way, whether it was watching the cricket or attending the various functions which we have held. It is much appreciated.
I hope everybody enjoyed the Kinks tribute band, the sponsored Bike ride (which I understand was against the wind all the way back from Bridlington) and the end of season Golf Tournament. Also, I hope everybody likes the new fencing we have down one side of the ground. Thank you to the Parish Council for helping to arrange the funding and to Paul Roberts of Acorn Fencing for doing such a good job.
The next Club event is the annual dinner on Friday 28th October at Scalm Park. It is £15 and includes a disco. We are only allowed a maximum of 65 people so please book early. Everybody’s welcome including that often-neglected breed, the junior parents – provided they are house trained. Please ring Chris Horbury ASAP - 01904 491669.
The date of the AGM has been put back to the 28th November at 8pm in the Village Hall. This is an important but, in the past, not particularly well supported event. It is the one time in the year when everybody gets the chance to say whatever they like about the club, positive or negative. Everybody should be there – players, supporters, junior parents, sponsors, anybody with any interest in cricket in the village and so on. Please be there.
Finally, I hope everybody enjoyed the season. Most things seem to have gone reasonably smoothly and, with cricket very much in the ascendancy at the moment, I hope everyone is looking forward to the 2006 season.
