Chairman's Report …
We are now nearing the end of the season and from my point of view everything has gone really well. The second team are comfortably placed in the third division with no danger of going down (or up) and have won one of the two cup competions. The 1st team are above the relagation area and probably need one more win to be certain of remaining in the first division.
The fund raising events - the Knock-Out + Hog Roast, the Jumble Sale, the Hare Cup have been organised and run very well by the usual suspects and supported well by the members, supporters and the village community. Financially, it appears that each event that has been run this year has either equalled or beaten the previous years efforts. A big thank you to everybody. Having said that, the committee and usual suspects do feel stretched at times and would be delighted if there were any volunteers to help in the running of the club and the events. The AGM is in November and new committee members are required.
Cup Matches
Congratulations to the 2nd XI who won the reserve evening cup beating the favourites, Oulton in the final at Wetherby – The last time we won this tournament was in 1971 when a young Geoff Marshall was captain. It was an extremely exciting game and kept everyone one the edges of their seats right up to the end. Church Fenton scored 100 runs for 9 wickets in their 20 overs, which, even on a difficult pitch, didn’t look like being enough. All the bowlers bowled well and the fielding was first class. Oulton struggled towards the total and with 2 overs remaining needed 10 runs. but with only 2 wickets in hand. A certain D. Watson, who was named man of the match, took the final 2 wickets in the penultimate over to leave Church Fenton the winners by 7 runs. Thomas Lovealso deserved consideration for man of the match for his 5 over spell at the beginning of the match which netted 2 important wickets for 21 runs (and his first over went for 11 of them). A fantastic win, a great day - congratulations to all involved.
Sponsorship, Match Balls & Fixture Card
A further match ball sponsorship has been received, in the name of Geoff Marshall. This now completes a full fixture card (22 Home Matches) and as such has raised a total of £440 in Match Ball Sponsorship alone. Please could you all add Geoff's name to the final fixture on your card :-
20th September - Little Ribston
Thanks to everyone who has sponsored a match ball this year. It is very much appreciated.
Jumble Sale
I am sure that all will agree who were there to see it with their own eyes, what a surprise it was to see a queue outside the Village Hall door at 6.30pm.
The Jumble Sale was extremely successful, took the form of a very hectic hour and a half, and ended up raising a total of £200+. Thanks to everyone who donated items as well as helped on the night.
Hare Cup
Thanks to everybody for a great day. The ground looked terrific, everybody said so. Thanks to Chris, John C. et al.
The food was wonderful - thanks to Jo, Sheila, Dom and everybody else.
I hope the league thought that we did a good job. Beryl says that this is the first time we have been invited to put on a final in her 48 years or so at the club. Hopefully it won't be as long before we put on another one.
As far as I could tell the preparation and running of the day was excellent. I was really delighted for everyone associated with the club.
A few things were repaired prior to the match. Gary R. got both showers working perfectly. John B repaired the seat near the sight screen and Les T repaired the window in the ladies.
Also thanks to Gary for running the bar. Thanks to everybody for everything.
Village Knock Out Final & Hog Roast Day
The final of the Village Knockout was between The Squash Club and The White Horse Teams, the eventual winners being The White Horse. Good fun was had by all (except for the chairman who broke a bone in his hand while taking a catch). Not only is this knock-out worth doing from a financial point of view but it also provides the village with some light-hearted cricket and the opportunity for many to turn their hand to a spell of batting and bowling.
Once again, the Hog Roast seemed to be a success - thankfully the rain held off and the day turned out to be very pleasant.
Thank you to everyone that helped on the day, many jobs had to be done; setting up the tents (thank you to Paul Baxter for the loan for his tent), bar (thanks to Nigel and Sue, and also Alan Watson for the loan of a till) and preparing the ground during in the morning; the preparation of the food by many for the event; sorting out the pavilion; serving the food and the heartless task of washing up afterwards; running the bar and clearing up the ground after the event. A lot of effort has to go into the day to make it a success.
The Hog Roast raised a total of £913
Thanks and congratulations are expressed to everyone.
